The goal of Photography Inspiring Children in Conservation is to inspire students to become conservation leaders by providing them with skills and knowledge regarding primate ecology and conservation issues and solutions, through the arts of photography, illustration, and storytelling. We work in primate habitat communities worldwide to support people in developing primate conservation capacity in their own communities.
We focus our efforts on young people in communities that share habitats with primates and other biodiversity in East Africa, Madagascar and Panama. We also aim to build conservation knowledge, skills and engagement in our own Yolo County communities, providing youth with wildlife photography workshops and engagement with conservation issues around the world. Below is a brief description of our proposed workshops for winter 2026:
Winter 2026, date TBD
We plan a full day of wildlife photography and conservation discussions at the Sacramento Zoo and or one of the UC Davis natural areas, where we can photograph a diversity of animals, and discuss conservation issues.
Our participants will be 12 – 18 years old, no more than 3 students per adult (15 total). The PICC team will instruct the students on the technical aspects of photography using our program DSLR Canon cameras with zoom lenses. We will meet a later day to review our photographs, and choose a couple from each student to print enlargements. These photos can be developed into a local gallery show (a local library, Community Center, or the County Fair). We will also be designing a conservation activity so that the students can become involved to learn more and help with primate conservation.
The Workshop will include:
• Zoo entry fee
• Lunch
• Use of DSLR camera with professional zoom lens
• Printed and e-resources for learning photography and primate conservation
• Local meeting to review photographs
• 2 enlarged prints (8×10”) of selected photos for each participant
